China has begun construction on what will be the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, a $167 billion project that will dwarf the Three Gorges Dam in both size and output. The dam is expected to generate three times more electricity than Three Gorges and is seen as a major step in China’s push for renewable energy and green finance. However, the project has triggered alarm in downstream countries, particularly India and Bangladesh, who fear it could threaten their water security and disrupt the Brahmaputra River’s flow. Environmentalists and human rights advocates have also raised concerns about the lack of consultation, potential ecological damage, and the impact on local communities in Tibet. The dam’s construction has boosted Chinese hydropower and construction stocks, but it has also heightened regional tensions and sparked debate over transboundary water management.
