China's efforts to compete with SpaceX's Starlink by launching a massive constellation of internet satellites have hit significant roadblocks. Despite plans to deploy up to 15,000 satellites by 2030, China has launched less than 1% of its target, largely due to a shortage of rockets and fierce competition for launch resources. The Qianfan (Thousand Sails) satellite network, intended to provide global broadband coverage, is facing long delays and falling far behind SpaceX, which already has nearly 8,000 Starlink satellites in orbit. These setbacks threaten China's goal of establishing dominance in the new space race. Meanwhile, other countries like India are making advances in their own space sectors.
